Summary/Abstract: Foreign influences on English are so great that they have changed English from an almost pure language to a completely mixed one. This paper deals with emergance of borrowings, variants of their spelling and pronunciation. The paper emphasises significance of the role of the dictionary in standardizing the spelling of the English language. Some key terms in this paper are discussed: Standard English, spelling and standardization of spelling, phonetic assimilation and pronunciation and a suggestion is given for solving some spelling and pronunciation problems through Regular English Pronunciation. REP is one suggestion for how English would sound if it were pronounced the way it was spelled. In this paper we endeavoured to examine the contribution of dictionaries in setting an orthography/spelling for borrowings which culminated in standardizing the spelling of Standard English laying stress on what dictionaries should do to promote the Standard spelling.
