Summary/Abstract: The second round of the 2009 presidential elections showcased a minor shift in regional political allegiance from their 2004 counterpart. Traian Băsescu managed to offset the popularity erosion brought on by his five-year mandate by obtaining superior results in certain specific geographic areas and in the counties where he had performed badly in 2004. The support he received from the Hungarian minority in the Covasna and Harghita counties represented a major and significant success for the incumbent candidate. However, his failure to capture the majority of votes in Bucharest, Romania's capital, is a sociological phenomenon of major significance and also an electoral metamorphosis which almost led to Traian Băsescu's defeat.
