Summary/Abstract: During the years of popular power in Romania there were several seeds of human rights scandals that the Communist state had to constantly keep an eye on. As a case study, this paper focuses on the 1977 miner’s strike that took place in the Jiu Valley. The protest is significant as ‘comrade Nicolae Ceausescu’ had to come in person in the Valley to temper the protest of the miners. The article examines the mobilization of forces by the local party leaders and activists as a means to cope with the “scandal” that broke out in the Jiu Valley in a moment in which, as one of our interviewees recalled, ‘the Authority of the Party was zero’.
