Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author suggests that we deal with the icon from the perspective of Orthodox Christian community and individual believer. As a means of social communication and the socialisation of a believer, the icon enables symbolical presentation of religious identity and religious culture in a vivid and simple way. In this paper, basic theoretical and methodological approaches are phenomenologic and semiotic ones. While the former deals with religion and religiousness as individual social and cultural phenomena, the latter is particularly convenient in this case since the icon can be understood as a form of language, with its own cultural grammar and syntax.
