Summary/Abstract: The present text is aimed at revealing the characteristic features of folklore studies in socialist Bulgaria1. The author discusses the nature of the achievements of the period, the career developments of the most prominent scholars, their ideas and publications, etc. At the same time these peculiarities are further interpreted against the background of the entire history of Bulgarian folklore studies. Advocating that today, when twenty years after the first transformations in Eastern Europe we are free from the emotional burdens of the past, I see plenty of reasons for the re-evaluation of the disciplinary strong points and pitfalls during socialism.
