Summary/Abstract: By extending the theme of the 19th century town musical culture that was relatively little studied in the historiography of Lithuanian music the article discusses the music which was played in the Lithuanian province during the inter-rebellion period. The surveyed thirty year repertoire is compared to that of the beginning of the century, the link between them is envisaged and the preliminary conclusions corresponding to the stage of scientific research surmounted at that time are presented. Due to the extent of the publication, only the most general features of the town-dwellers’ music repertoire that significantly evolved throughout several decades (1831–1863) are listed and only the most popular literature on music pedagogy is discussed. It is stated that the inter-rebellion music repertoire of Lithuanian town-dwellers was stylistically simple – the Romanticism took root in the music everyone was fond of. Despite the political situation which was becoming increasingly more complicated, the musical culture of Lithuanian towndwellers remained European and peculiar and there were attempts to cultivate the Lithuanian music movement. Notwithstanding the closure of Vilnius University, the continuation of music science and music self-education can be seen. Therefore, the literature on music pedagogy did not lose its relevance. The exploration of the repertoire shows further topographic changes in the music movement of Lithuanian town-dwellers and the overall development of town music culture. Most parameters of inter-rebellion music repertoire of town-dwellers testify to the consistent democratization of Lithuanian musical culture. The article is based on the archival materials. Such scientific research methods as comparative method, analysis and synthesis have been used.
