Summary/Abstract: One of the most detailed analysis of the present stage of capitalism is provided by Luc Boltanski and Eve Chiapello. Although their data collection is limited primarily to France, they suggest that from the 80s onwards similar transformations have been taking place with respect to the realm of work everywhere else. Followed by a brief general summary, this paper examines how the meaning of the term ‘spirit of capitalism’ differs in Boltanski and Chiapello’s use from that of Weber. Then, two interrelated topics are addressed: the emergence of new features and types of personality; and the issue of mobility-based inequality, and exploitation in contemporary capitalism. Building on these discussions, the author outlines an exploitation-based model of social stratification.
