Summary/Abstract: The basic theoretical and methodological principle underlying the present article is the formulation of the language of epic poetry as one of the forms of supradialectal speech. This provides one with а possibility to trace the „semantic evolution” of certain epinyms – denominations of epic personage. Considered from а lexico-semantic point of view this presents an indivisible connotative unit. An analysis is made on the synchronic and diachronic levels of the epinyms оf polenitsa, khrabr, vityаz = vitеts, dоbryi mоlodyets = dоbаr уunаk. The results of the analysis point unmistakably to the language of the folksong not being the same as dialectal speech. Besides, several new aspects have been stressed upon with regard to: the relationships between the language of the single folklore genres and the vernacular of their performers; the folklore migration of the linguistic forms on an interdialectical and all-Slavic scale; the specific character of the speech peculiarities of the Slavic folk poetry in its various artistic forms and ethnic varieties.
