Summary/Abstract: The eastern part of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, which includes the southern part of the historic Zemplén County and the area of Abaúj County situated to the east of the River Hernád, is provided with extremely significant tourist attractions. These attractions include both the natural environment and man-made phenomena. Half of the county’s tourist attractions (54) are situated in Zemplén County. Driven by the regional and economic development possibilities offered by tourism, Zemplén Local Enterprise Foundation and the towns of Sárospatak, Sátoraljaújhely, Szerencs and Tokaj, along with their statistical districts, submitted an application to the Hungarian National Tourist Office (Magyar Turizmus Zrt., hereafter referred to as “HNTO”). The aim of this application was to obtain financial support for the development of tourism in the Zemplén Region. Due to the support received from the HNTO, it became possible to prepare the Tourism Development Programme of the Zemplén Region in 1997.
