Summary/Abstract: The article defines the social and practical preconditions (development of science and technology, restructuring of environment, globalisation, etc.) that have determined the emergence of new moral problems in the life of society over the past decades in the world and in Lithuania. Attention is paid to the fact that under the conditions of intensive change, new social strata seeking actively to protect their rights, residential environment, health, integrity, and other values got involved in the public discourse on moral problems. In this connection, a search for the general principles of a definite level acceptable to people differing in terms of interests and world outlook was initiated in the area of ethics. Simultaneously, motivation for moral behaviour developed unusual characteristics: here, a significant position was occupied by subject-related knowledge, especially scientific-type knowledge securing desired practical results in a specific sphere. Adaptation of the normative discourse to the solution of specific situations involving a moral conflict transformed the traditional system of ethics, opening up new vistas for a more powerful influence on the development of civilisation.
