Summary/Abstract: Since 1999, after more than two decades of effort on the part of academics, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been granting scholars access to archival documents produced before the mid- 1960s.1 These recently-released, formerly highly-classified documents not only constitute a valuable resource for research into the history of NATO, its strategy, and its decision-making processes, but also contain a great deal of information about the views of the alliance.s member states and Main Headquarters regarding situations and events in neighboring areas. These documents thus provide an interesting contribution to the recent history of states that lay for decades on the other side of the “Iron Curtain”.
