Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of a correlative study of the relation between: selfesteem, social orientations (regarding the allocation of resources to oneself and others) and control preferences (self-control, power, dependence and respect preferences). The subjects were 300 Polish students aged 18–19. The study provides a following picture: a great majority of participants (90%) had a high level of self-esteem, as predicted – a proself attitude is twice as frequent as a prosocial one. “Proselves” are represented by competitors and individualists. “Prosocials” are represented by cooperators and altruists. No significant relationship was found between self-esteem and social orientations. Self-esteem is correlated with preference of self-control. People with high self-esteem have strong desire for self-control. There is no correlation between self-esteem and power preference. A conclusion can be drawn that those who have high self-esteem want to control the situation by themselves, but perhaps not necessarily want to hold power.
