Summary/Abstract: This article examines, based on documentary and other materials, the reasons behind the social conflict between the nobility and commoners in Ubykh society in the first half of the 19th century in northern Caucasus. The authors point to the link between the 1785 Ubykh civil war and the commencement of the process of Islamization of the region. The authors come to the conclusion that the social crisis in Ubykh society was a crucial factor that led the mountaineers to the Muhajirism tragedy.
