Summary/Abstract: Montenegro, as well as many transitional countries, is facing with the problem of high current account deficit, balance of payments. The main reasons that led to the growth of the current account deficit of Montenegro are: low competitiveness of domestic producers, high import of electricity, the increase in oil prices on global stock markets, large influx of foreign direct investments, excessive consumption, high growth rate of loans and others. In the conditions of the global financial crisis, disbalance in payments of Montenegro was improved. Reduction of current account deficit came with the global crisis, it is not formed as a result of improved competitiveness of the Montenegrin economy, and this can be a threat for the sustainability of current account deficit.
