The program of enlightened nationalism in some texts of Ivan D. Shishmanov

Summary/Abstract: The research is dedicated to some unpublished or little known texts of Ivan Shishmanov as “Religiousness and Patriotism”, “Cultural Tasks of Macedonian Youth” and “Our Higher School”, in which the famous enlightened figure formulated most completely the program of the enlightened nationalism. The conception of Ivan Shishmanov of modern nation as a bridge between the world and national cultures may be followed up via their analysis. In the opinion of the scientist the national cultural building is the formation of a society, open for knowledge and global experience, on the basis of the natural ethnic community. In this manner both the patriotic and the cosmopolitan beginning in the enlightened life are stored and developed and the young generation perceives the global cultural wealth without tearing themselves away from their roots and losing their national identity. The thesis about the program significance of the texts reviewed in the ideological heritage of the eminent scientist is backed up with arguments in the article, the position of Ivan Shishmanov on the problem of the ratio of morality, science and politics, is clarified as well as the legacy of the scientist about the moderate enlightened nationalism as motivation for serving the objectives of pure science.
