Summary/Abstract: Art, and music in particular, played an important part at the court of Charlemagne. Upon the basis of extensive sources the author considered grave controversies relating to the liturgical chant and presented fervent debates, brimming with persuasive rhetorical operations, between Roman (source) and Frankish (impure) tradition. A royal “verdict” compelled the Gauls to return to the sources (St. Gregory) in order to restore to the Gregorian chant its original purity.
