Summary/Abstract: European ecological network “Natura 2000” is a form of environmental protection, which is spread over European Union countries. Its main objective is to protect the biodiversity of our continent. The operating principle of “Natura 2000” is based on two directives: the birds’ and the habitats’. In Poland, the rules of the directives began to be phased in from 2004 with the Polish accession to the European Union. This process continues today. When creating “Natura 2000” areas, only environment benefits are taken into account. For this reason, the process is often met with social disapproval. However, fundamental principles means that these areas are able to conduct their activities, if appropriate conditions are made. The aim of this study is to explore how “Natura 2000” areas are affecting the operation of farms in the district of Olsztyn in Warmia and Mazury voivodeship. Also the level of farmers’ knowledge of “Natura 2000” was examined. Moreover, the opinions of farmers about the nature conservation was investigated. In conclusion, the survey proved that the majority of farmers do not feel any restrictions or impact of “Natura 2000”network. However, mainly thanks to grants for loss of income benefits farmers have good opinions about “Natura 2000”.
