Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the intercultural communication assumptions embracing the process of perception of language identity. This process is affected by the junction of cultures and the diversity of conceptions of the period under consideration. The paper highlights the context of intercultural cooperation between the Polish and the Lithuanians as well as emphasizes the influence of the Polish literature on the formation and later on functioning of the Lithuanian language identity. The object of the study is to analyze a very diverse context of intercultural cooperation between the Polish and the Lithuanians and to distinguish the most specific features of the expression of national and language identity. The theoretical part of the paper is based on S. Salkauskis’ theory of cultural synthesis and diverse conceptions developed by modern sociologists and cultural historians. The prewar periodicals “Iskry” and “Wytrwaj” have been chosen for the analysis. The poems by the famous poets K.Ilakovicuvna and Liudas Gira and their translated versions are discussed. In these poems the junction of two cultures – Lithuanian and Polish – is smooth and harmonious, free from hostility (native-alien). Numerous examples serve as evidence of joint efforts to seek cultural progress. The dominating tendencies are identified within the wide context of cultural communication. The conclusions led to the formulation of cultural and social insights into the historical period under consideration.
