Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the status of Lithuanian language under the influence of sociocultural context. The article is primarily concerned with distinctive features pertaining to the use of Lithuanian language in the public sphere (in periodical press). It discusses the significance of Lithuanian language to cultural identity and attempts proving that the mother tongue criterion is very important to the sociocultural context. The article especially underlines those cultural values that reflect the official status of a language as the most important factor strengthening cultural awareness of the nation. Various quotations from pre-war periodical press are used to illustrate the role of the language learning doctrine (which was constantly improved). The argument is substantiated with first-hand examples from various periodical sources selected by the author.
