The Siege Experiences: The Theatrical Debut of Director Giedrius Mackevičius

Summary/Abstract: The article provides the analysis of autobiographical theatre production by director debutant Giedrius Mackevičius “The Siege”. From 1971 in theatre productions in Kaunas Drama and Musical theatres an open confrontation with the Soviet regime issues were revealed. In the performances “Barbora Radvilaitė” and “Capriccio of the XX century” by Jonas Jurašas and Modris Tenisons theatre audience was introduced to nonconformity to the normative aesthetics of socialist realism. The performance of debutant G. Mackevičius “Apsiaustis” (“The Siege”) by Judita Vaičiūnaitė, the narrative of nonconformity to social regime was supplemented by the theme of a spiritual siege. The metaphorical language of the play, directed by G. Mackevičius, revealed the prison paradigm and the siege sensibility, experienced by the actors and personages of the play.
