Summary/Abstract: This paper is a partial investigation of the contemporary debate on natural necessity. Until recent years, the Humean view that natural laws are forms of regularity was almost undisputed. Nowadays, philosophers such as Ellis, Armstrong or Mumford and others are attempting to show that the regularist position should be abandoned. The main doctrine that will be discussed is scientific essentialism and its arguments for the existence of natural kinds and their essences. The essentialism of Brian Ellis will be contrasted with Humean scepticism about natural necessity, but also with alternative necessitarian theories.
