Summary/Abstract: Abstract: Lette: ‘I Can’t Live Without Me’ –Ways of Individuation in Mayenburg’s Social Satire. The Ugly One by Marius von Mayenburg is not only the story of what one is willing to give up in order to be accepted, but also a social satire on beauty, identity and self-realization. This play of contradictions and comparisons shows the unacceptable face of capitalism with its shallow values and brutality through the successful and unsuccessful processes of individuation. Being totally independent of achievements, this process of psychological maturity has a sinuous way in Lette’s case. I intend to reveal the main factors that stand in Lette’s way of coming to self-hood by analyzing his progressive self-division. For the fulfillment of this task I am willing to reflect on the place of individuality in a homogenized, celebrity obsessed, modern society, which places outward appearance above substance. Besides focusing on the challenges that becoming a marketing product has, I am willing to argue on what the difference between the outward and the inward transformation is and what are its benefits and disadvantages. Finally I would like to prove how Lette’s uniqueness and narcissism may lead to successful individuation, and how he manages to save his inner self, when he is transfixed by his own mirror image.
