Summary/Abstract: The Author concentrates on an advice given by Hesiod to his brother Perses about the dignity of work in the section of his poem dedicated to “works” and on import which this advice can have for us today. As Hesiod observes, wealth creation based upon real work depends upon a morally healthy political climate. According to the Author, if we are to learn anything today about work from Hesiod’s Works and Days, it is that the healthy political climate upon which a highly virtuous work community, including democratic capitalism, depends presupposes honest courts. As Hesiod realized centuries ago, once lawyers, judges, and courts become infected with widespread dishon-esty, they tend to wind up infecting the entire culture with vicious moral habits of envy, jealousy, dishonesty, and greed that tend to produce liars and cheats who make the economic prosperity and political order impossible to sustain.
