Summary/Abstract: During the middle of the nineteenth century, the German historian Leopold von Ranke was showing a particular interest in the universe of the historical writing and, of course, for the means by which the reconstruction of the past realities could be made. According to his opinion, writing history, elaborating a representation of the past did not mean following a certain pattern, in other words a model that once truly respected, could lead to a practical work expressing the unique point of view upon narrated facts. On the contrary, Leopold von Ranke rejected the Illuminist tradition and the eighteenth century educative and moralizing history, emphasizing the necessity of acknowledging and understanding of the past by each individual. Taking into account these considerations, the following research intends to analyze the fundamental principles of the Rankean historical conception, their influence upon the historical methodology being able to emphasize the originality and the modernity of the historical investigation. Secondly, the analysis aims to show to what extent Leopold von Ranke has belonged to a movement born within the German universe of historical writing in the Romantic period, determining the apparition of a historiographical pattern. Finally, the investigation is willing to evaluate the positive aspects and the limits of the Rankean historical conception and method, to put it in other words, whether the Rankean historiographical pattern proves its availability in the contemporary universe of historical writing.
