Summary/Abstract: The author suggests that the National Council of Telecommunications and Informatics (NHIT) should define their position as policy or preference, and not as scientific statement or hypothesis. He agrees with the extended, holistic interpretation of the concept of the information society. He raises arguments in favour of accepting the term „information society” instead of „knowledge society”: (a) in this decade, Hungary can gain the status of an information society at best, so becoming a knowledge society can only be a long-term goal. (b) In official documents of the European Union, mainly the term „information society” is used. The author rejects the narrow, technology-centered interpretation of the term. He argues that this notion, according to several disciplines concerned and the integrated meta-theory, must not be reduced or conceptually pigeon-holed as suggested by NHIT.
