Summary/Abstract: An ascetic practice called chapter of faults, which consists essentially of fraternal admonition and confession by a religious of his/her faults in front of the community, has its origin in the monastic life. Then this practice was adopted by the new religious institutes. This constituted a continuation of existing practices in the early Christian communities and was recommended, for example, by St Matthew’s Gospel (Mt 18, 15–17) who writes about fraternal admonition and also by the letter of St. James which recommends the confessing of sins to one another and praying for one another in order to obtain the health of the soul (Jam 5, 16). During the period of renewal following Vatican II the chapter of faults was withdrawn from the life of most religious institutes thus creating a certain void. Th e question then arises whether it is useful and possible to reintroduce it in a renewed form, or whether some other penitential practice could replace it. However, some modern writers suggest a return to the chapter of faults, or at least, the need to incorporate its essential elements in other religious penitential practices.
