Summary/Abstract: In canon 600 of the Code of Canonical Law from 1983 legislator says, that realisation of evangelical poverty council practised by religious, is founded, among other things, on leading a hard-working life. This way the work of religious becomes one of the aspects of following poor Christ and fits to the practice of religious poverty. At present, because of the lack of new religious vocations, work takes more room in life of religious. It seems, however, that religious life misses, the proper for it, comprehension of work and hardship connected with it, accepting mentality of the world in relation to it. At the same time the question of beneficial influence of work in developing spiritual life of the religious has been lost. Many of them yield to detrimental workaholism, others however incline to slothful life. Hence, the intention of the article is to recall the definition of work, and bring the most important questions connected to the work of religious for instance: to be subject to the common work law; work as a possibility to proclaim Christ; accepting work to support oneself, and the people in need; giving a testimony about a sense of a human work, and proper relation between work and prayer; question of laziness, and unreliable work, which are the enemy of the soul of religious.
