Summary/Abstract: The article attempts a systematic presentation of Ulrich Beck’s project for a new sociological paradigm – the so-called „cosmopolitan sociology“, which is expected to surmount the deficits of a number of classical paradigms whose basic categories, theoretical models and analytic instruments have, in Beck’s view, become incapable of capturing and thematizing the quickly changing realities of the late 20th and early 21st century. Firstly, the concept of „cosmopolitization“ is situated in a field of external distinctions with respect to similar or close concepts, in order to outline the contents and boundaries of the concept. After that the theoretical and research programme of this new paradigm is reconstructed. And finally it is placed in the context of debates that started in the late 20th century with regard to the end of sociology; through this context the author aims to draw attention to the potential this paradigm offers for a renewal of sociology. Hence it is said it can be viewed as a new „invitation to sociology“, respectively, as an invitation to a new sociology after the „end of sociology“.
