Summary/Abstract: The paper presents two aspects of the contemporary life of the Russian Starrobredsi (Old Believers) in the post socialist countries from the Balkans to the Baltic Region, members of the European Union: 1) The Old Believers as a (Russian) minority in the “new” European democracies and the resulting processes; 2) Their functioning as a religious and ethnic community, actively participating in the post-modern processes of revival of their native culture, traditions and identity. The notions of “minority” in the new member countries of the European Union (on the Balkans – Bulgaria, Romania and in the Baltic Region – Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) are different, the attitude to the Russian minorities is also different in the post-socialist space. The Old Believers are an interesting instance of a community in different political and national contexts, such as the Balkan and the Baltic ones. The text has been composed on the basis of field research of the Balkans and the Baltic Region (2006–2008), as well as on published and archive materials.
