Are the Nowadays Show-Business Superstars Heroes?

Summary/Abstract: The idea that the admiration of the heroes is quasi-religious is commonplace in the new European science – it can be found implicitly or explicitly in the works of Giambattista Vico, Thomas Carlyle, Gustav Le Bon, Sigmund Freud. Can admiration of the modern show-business superstars be understood as quasi-religious too? Answering this question, the paper suggests that over the similitude an important difference should be outlined: the hero-worship is shaped by analogy with the religious cult, while the superstar’s cult – by analogy with idolatry.
