Plants in the Slavonic “Folk Bible”

Summary/Abstract: A number of dialectal Slavonic phytonyms is tied to some characters of Christian mythology. The article analyses the objective features plants, which caused this connection and demonstrates the influence of such ties on creating plant names, on their usage in calendar rituals, in folk medicine and magic. Several plants features are analyzed, among them: time of appearance and blooming, form of various organs, their color, as well as the cases of several features combination. Different plants, having the same attributes, may receive the same name and associate with the same biblical character. And vice versa, the same plant can associate with several personages, as it has a number of features. Two conditions, as a rule, are necessary for occurrence of such ties – 1) presence of an attribute in a plant and 2) an episode in a saint’s life described in a canonical text or attributed to a given character in the texts of the “Folk Bible”.
