SUPPLEMENT TO THE COMPILATION OF THE NEW EDITION (2010) OF HEINRICH GÖSEKEN’S GERMAN-LATIN-ESTONIAN GLOSSARY (1660)

Summary/Abstract: In 1660 a 547-page book written by the Baltic-German pastor Heinrich Göseken working in Estonia, titled Manuductio ad Linguam Oesthonicam was published. The book consisted of a part concerning teaching the Estonian language and a German-Latin-Estonian glossary. This article gives an overview of the method developed by the author for studying the material concerning Estonian in Göseken’s glossary and in other bilingual glossaries. The method is characterised by a shift in focus to the material concerning Estonian and the analysis thereof from a contemporary point of view. The list of entry words of the new edition of the German- Estonian glossary, Heinrich Göseken’s Grammar and Glossary 350 (2010), analysed in the manner described, proceeds from the alphabetical order of Estonian words. The contemporary spellings of speech forms are used as entry words. The study of Estonian material is of primary importance: the meaning of opaque entry words is explained and morphosyntactic information is added based on a contemporary description of grammar. Hence those interested will have easier access to archaic material and they can use it both to study Estonian lexis and grammar as well as, for example, to discuss the history of particular languages. The article consists of seven sections. The introduction is followed by an overview of the characteristics of the seventeenth-century missionary linguistics on the territory of Estonia and the socio-cultural background of the dictionaries of the time. The third section describes Göseken’s glossary of 1660. The fourth section is dedicated to an overview of the method and section five describes the principles underlying the selection of entry words and the explanation of their meaning and the application of these principles in the 2010 edition of Göseken’s glossary. The article concludes with a summary and the list of references. The article is based on the author’s experience acquired in the drafting of the glossary section of the 2010 edition . The analysis herein is meant to be a supplement to the accompanying texts of the collection in question and the author’s earlier article on the problems arising from the original glossary, the reconstruction of roots and the separation of entry word nests into single lemmas.
