Summary/Abstract: The area of certified land reached 125,5 thousands ha, 4,7 percent of declared agricultural land in 2007. The number of organic farms in 2007 increased 21,6 percent, comparing with 2006, area of certified land – 22,9 percent. Certification organization Ekoagros in 2008 forecasting the decrease in development of organic farming. Two filial of certification body were established in Telšiai and Utena in 2006, on purpose to improve the quality and effectiveness of certification service in Lithuania. Half of willing to farm in organic way are certified there, and a half – in Kaunas department. Farming in 2007 mainly took place in farms up to the 30 ha. 65 percent of all farms were such – 1836. Cereals and legumes prevailed in crop structure in 2007, as before. Cereals take 49 percent in structure of crops, legumes – 12 percent, mixtures of cereals and legumes – 8 percent, perennial grasses – 20 percent, fallows – 2 percent. The tendencies of organic farms enlargement, seeking for the bigger sum of allowance (no limited maximal sum of allowance) twisted the spirit and definition of organic farming. Large – scale farms mainly deal with crop production, what is incongruous with rules of sustainable development. The new European Union Regulation No. 834/2007 on Organic Production and Labelling of Organic Products shall apply from 1 January 2009, the new rules of organic farming have to be revised and approved and other juridical documents will be prepared and approved afterwords.
