On the usage of prepositions „anot“ and „pasak“

Summary/Abstract: The tendencies of usage of prepositions anot [Engl. in accordance with] and pasak [Engl. according to] are discussed in the article because there are no researches in the works of Lithuanian linguistics on this topic. In the works of Lithuanian linguistics, these prepositions are mostly defined as synonyms which can replace each other. Thus, it is analyzed in the article whether prepositions anot [Engl. in accordance with] and pasak [Engl. according to] are used as synonyms or with different meanings. The research showed these prepositions are not used in the same way in real usage – both as synonyms and with different meanings. They are mostly used as synonyms in the texts which need indicating the source of information frequently. Then, in order to avoid the repetition of the same prepositions, the prepositions are used as synonyms in adjacent sentences. Preposition anot [Engl. in accordance with] is used when the words of another person are quoted or the acceptable source of information is indicated and preposition pasak [Engl. according to] is chosen when the idea is narrated in the own words or the source of information is only denoted, but the person does not express the own opinion on the accuracy of that information. In this aspect, the tendencies of more frequent usage of preposition pasak [Engl. according to] in texts of the publicist style could be explained. It is especially relevant for modern publicist sources (after the Revival) containing more doubts and avoiding to give the own opinion next to the indicated source of information.
