Summary/Abstract: The study is focused on the analysis of Christmas and New Year’s traditional ceremonial processions of male youth ritual groups on the territory of contemporary Samokov district. The interpretation is made from the not coinciding points of view of ethnology and medieval studies. In Part I. the attention is concentrated on the kunjadzhii from the village of Alino. Authors plan to continue with description and analysis of the gjatsi from the Iskars’ region – the villages of Govedartsi, Mala Tsarkva, Madzhare, and Beli Iskar, as well as some adjacent settlements. All authentic folklore materials are recorded during field ethnological and archival expeditions of the ‘Ongal’ Association of Anthropology, Ethnology and Folklore Studies and its previous organizational forms between 1989 and 2007.
