Summary/Abstract: Islamic banking is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. Although it is a relatively new phenomenon, it has been able to attract assets worth more than one trillion US dollars. Islamic banking differs from classical banking, because its activity is consistent with the principles of Islamic sharia law, which prohibits the giving and taking of interest ("riba"). Furthermore, sharia prohibits investing in businesses that provide goods or services considered contrary to Islamic principles. Although these principle have been applied in varying degrees by Muslims since the advent of Islam, Islamic banking represents a concept which tries to apply these principles in a modern context.
