Summary/Abstract: World War I and the revolution that swept the entire Central and Eastern Europe caused major changes on the political map of a large part of the continent. I do not limit the term “revolution” to the dramatic events in Russia in the spring and autumn of 1917 and the episode of the Hungarian Soviet Republic. In the years 1917–1920 the powerful social movement in support of fundamental change embraced an extensive territory, spreading approximately from the western parts of Asia to the Rhine, the eastern parts of the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. It led to the fall of three big powers, three empires symbolized by black eagles; it commenced the building of a system called socialist (this current most often attracts the attention of historians and publicists irrespective of their political sympathies), as well as a peasants’ rebellion aimed at dividing large land estates dating back to feudal social structures.
