Summary/Abstract: This paper tries to aplly the methodology of the genological system of the literary science on the field of the history of art concerning Moravian paintings of the 17th century. The system unambiguously supports the notoriously known facts about the significant deterioration of art during the whole period of the 30-year war. The artistic activities start to develop again almost immediately after the end of the war and real progress is supported by the consolidation of economic conditions after Bishop Charles of Lichtenstein-Castelcorno took up of his service and during the succeeding period of his rule. The development culminates in the 70s of the 17th century and one can say that since the 70s the quality has reached the good Central European average. It is important to note that the Moravian paintings involved practically all kinds and genres typical of this period that were present in the European visual culture. The religious intolerance ist most probably the casue of the disappearance of a type of pendent picture – epitaph and technical progress licvidated another, rather a subtype – cards painting. In the Moravian environment one can find, with a short delay, those new genres like landscape and still-life that were characteristic of the 17th century. The delay was caused again by a long period of war, nevertheless this delay corresponds with the overall state of the country and it is adequate to cultural activities not only connected with visual culture.
