Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the issue of obesity, which has recently been declared by the WTO as a global epidemic. The obesity not only has health impact, but social and economic as well. The paper presents basic data concerning the extent of this problem in the EU, the causes of obesity, the actions aimed at combating this medical condition and the controversies around it. The articles concludes with a brief analysis of the current situation and prospects for Poland.
