Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the origin of Old Czech lebdušě, lebduška, Czech linduška ’a bird pipit, Anthus’ and the connected with them Czech dialectal names leptuška, levduše, levduška, linda, libuše, liluška. The already existing Machek’s etymology is supplemented and specified and an alternative explanation is proposed concerning semantic motivation, supposing primary phonetic variants (of the onomatopoetic root) with expressive etymological meaning ’windbag, chatterer’. With respect to the extralinguistic facts, it is stepped on the ground (as Machek also does) of the mixture of both pipit and woodlark and their connection in folk “naive” concepts. The proposed explanation is based on a wider lexical-semantic Slavonic context, word-formative characteristics of names as well as on some onomasiological regularities outlined in the systems of the names of birds in Czech and Bulgarian.
