Summary/Abstract: It is a very interesting question why the First Hungarian Chief Nurse, Zsuzsanna Kossuth, is not widely remembered while her contemporary, ‘The Lady with the Lamp’, Florence Nightingale, is a household name and an icon of European historiography. This study presents an analysis and comparison of the life paths and cultural memories of these two important figures. The significant disparity between their memories could be attributed superficially to differences in their characters or to the efficiency of their nursing activities. My purpose in this study is to challenge such assumptions, raise awareness of Zsuzsanna Kossuth’s memory alongside that of her British contemporary, and thus improve her national and historical reputation.
