Summary/Abstract: The present study aimed to assess the mediating role of personality traits in the associations between attachment anxiety and characteristics of sleep and dreams. The sample consisted of 435 participants (mean age = 32.2 years), and validated self-report instruments were employed. The results of the correlational and mediation analyses indicate that experiences during sleep are associated both with processes of introspection and self-knowledge and with emotional distress. Greater importance attributed to dreams and higher perceived dream reality were associated with greater reflectiveness and self-knowledge, whereas negative emotionality and nightmare-related distress were associated with attachment anxiety, depression, and psychasthenic characteristics. Positive emotions experienced during sleep were associated with lower levels of psychopathological personality traits. The mediation analyses showed that anxiety in close relationships was associated with sleep characteristics and attitudes toward sleep through different pathways, depending on personality organization. Specifically, hypochondriacal and paranoid traits were associated with a more negative experience of sleep, whereas psychasthenic and schizoid characteristics were associated with greater introspection and a stronger tendency to seek meaning in dreams. Overall, sleep emerges as a dynamic psychological space in which personality characteristics, emotional regulation, and processes of self-knowledge intersect.
