Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development aims at optimizing the central function of education for human personality training with a view for long-term social integration. At operational pedagogical concept level, sustainable development and training ensure the quality of the school curriculum, also by opening towards “new education”. It is founded and promoted by UNESCO by working towards a general goal: a) political — “the universal transformation of our world”; b) pedagogical the design and achievement of quality education. Learning objectives, defined in terms of competencies, are developed by specifying the general educational goal. In the higher-level, axiomatic normative framework, quality education is a key factor for sustainable development, tested at global curricular design level (objectives — basic contents; teaching-learning-assessment methodology), as well as at open design level (in terms of resources and of the existing specific conditions that require appropriate forms of organization and pedagogical styles). Nevertheless, an unconditional appeal to sustainable development holds the risk of over burdening non-formal and informal education or the local curriculum. Viable solutions involve relating sustainable development to all the axiological and methodolo- gical resources of lifelong learning and self-education. The epistemological anchoring of the pedagogical concept of sustainable development is achievable in the context of curricular design for education/training. At this level, the tendency for a prospective formative approach towards reality from a psychological, social, analytical, and synthetic perspective is capitalized.
