Eschatological Beliefs and Ideas in the Romanian and Bulgarian Folklore

Summary/Abstract: This research focuses on the eschatological beliefs and ideas in the Bulgarian and Romanian folklore at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. These representations are strictly related to a series of events, which were able to cause social and economic disequilibria: the natural calamities, astronomic events, the change of the sovereigns, social conflicts etc. They are an important instrument for finding out the opinions of the Balkan communities on their social and cultural identity and the dynamics of the relation between the oral culture and the written culture. I presented a general report of the Bulgarian and Romanian researches in this field and a set of methodological problems. I tried to identify the main eschatological themes and motifs in the Bulgarian and Romanian folklore. In the end, I referred to a contemporary eschatological scenario: the ideas on the end of the world and the messianic mission of Ilia Gulev, a contemporary pseudo-prophet.
