Summary/Abstract: In this study, we focused on frequent collocations of the adjective toxic with nouns reflecting its metaphorical extension in meaning (e.g., toxic person, toxic relationship, toxic asset, toxic loan). Using corpus data, we analyzed the lexical-semantic properties of the lexeme toxic from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, drawing on the view of metaphor as a conceptual tool of thought that is reflected in linguistic expression. We investigated how the primary meaning ‘harmful, poisonous’ is extended to new thematic domains in which the adjective performs an evaluative function, and how this evaluative component forms part of the word’s derivational motivation.
