Summary/Abstract: This review aims to evaluate the literature on the relationship between attachment styles and bipolar symptoms in individuals involved in romantic relationships, with a particular focus on the potential mediating role of psychological flexibility. Romantic relationships have a significant impact on emotion regulation processes and psychological well-being. In this context, attachment styles, psychological flexibility, and bipolar symptoms are considered key variables in understanding relational and emotional functioning. According to attachment theory, early caregiving experiences shape individuals’ emotional and interpersonal functioning in adulthood. Insecure attachment styles, in particular, are associated with increased emotional reactivity, interpersonal stress, and poor emotion regulation abilities. Bipolar disorder is characterized by mood fluctuations and is influenced not only by biological factors but also by psychosocial and relational processes. Psychological flexibility is defined as the ability to act in accordance with personal values despite difficult internal experiences and is considered a protective psychological process within the framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The literature suggests that insecure attachment may reduce psychological flexibility, which in turn may increase vulnerability to bipolar symptoms through difficulties in emotion regulation. In conclusion, this review proposes an integrative theoretical model suggesting that psychological flexibility may serve as a mediating mechanism between attachment styles and bipolar symptoms.
