Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the Czech translation of the essay collection Точка нуль [Absolute Zero] by contemporary Ukrainian writer Artem Chekh, paying particular attention to several problematic areas – the translation of military vocabulary, war-related realia, criminal slang, vulgarisms, phraseologisms, as well as historical, Soviet and post-Soviet realia, and toponyms. Each category is illustrated by numerous examples (always citing the expression in the original and its Czech equivalent appearing in the published translation), some of which are analyzed and discussed in more detail, providing insight into the broader context in which the expression is used. These examples clearly demonstrate that the text represents an exceptionally demanding task for translators, as we can observe the very different level of the Czech reader’s “preparedness” to engage with a text of this kind.
