Summary/Abstract: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex personality disorder characterized by difficulties in emotion regulation, impulsivity, identity confusion, and problems in interpersonal relationships. Due to the high prevalence of selfharming behaviors and suicide attempts, it is considered a significant mental health problem in clinical settings. In recent years, the concept of mentalization has gained importance in explaining Borderline Personality Disorder. Mentalization is defined as the ability to understand both one’s own mental processes and the emotions, thoughts, and intentions of others. Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder may experience impairments in mentalization capacity, especially under intense stress. These impairments are thought to be associated with emotion regulation difficulties, impulsive behaviors, and interpersonal relationship problems. In this review study, the etiology, epidemiology, theoretical foundations, and DSM-5 classification of Borderline Personality Disorder were examined. In addition, the effects of Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) on Borderline Personality Disorder were evaluated in light of current literature. Research findings indicate that MBT has positive effects particularly on self-harming behaviors, impulsivity, and interpersonal relationship problems. Furthermore, Mentalization-Based Therapy has been shown to improve emotion regulation skills and overall functioning. As a result, MBT is considered one of the effective psychotherapy approaches in the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder.
