Summary/Abstract: Mircea Cărtărescu (born 1956 in Bucharest)—poet, prose writer, and essayist—is one of the most significant figures in Romanian postmodern literature and the recipient of numerous literary awards. He is the author of the novels *Nostalgia* (1993) and *Travesti* (1994), which depict youth during the fall of communism and the transition to democracy. His short story collection *De ce iubim femeile* (Why We Love Women) became a bestseller in Romania in 2005. In his stories, he reveals himself to be a keen observer and a profound connoisseur of women; for him, they are not merely objects of aesthetic fascination but also embodiments of fragility and emotion—qualities sometimes linked to primal, maternal love. Cărtărescu also engages with Romanian postmodernism from a theoretical perspective, having published the scholarly monograph *Postmodernismul românesc* (1999).
