Summary/Abstract: Ismail Kadare (born 1936 in Gjirokastër) is the most renowned contemporary Albanian writer. In addition to novels, his body of work includes poetry collections, short stories, biographical notes, interviews, reflections on literature and art, and essays. He gained international acclaim with the novel *Gjenerali i ushtrisë së vdekur* (1963; Czech: *Generál mrtvé armády*, 1990).
